Welcome to the beautiful world of The Sicilian Gypsy. Born in a small village in the mountainous region of Sicily, Maria at the young age of three was blessed with a unique talent when she picked up a needle and thread, a craft taught to her by her mother Lucia Di Bernardo Amato. After World War II, moving to Buenos Aires, Argentina where she came to further develop her career and became a professor in the arts of tailoring. With her talents in high demand, she created incredible works of art reflecting upon her European influences. From the simplest of items to men's hand-tailored suits, theatrical costumes and elaborate one-of-a-kind wedding gowns, she quickly became a renowned master tailor in the metropolis of Buenos Aires. Feeling as if Argentina didn’t offer her all she wanted, she set out to achieve the American Dream and moved to New London, Connecticut with her family. Then, yet again a few years later, tired of the cold weather, this Gypsy decided to move to Sunny Southern California.
In this collaboration of two worlds, Maria and her daughter, Susan Lafica, of FIORI Couture Collection a fashion designer, stylist and artist team up and create these beautiful works of art. From their historic past, they pave the way in fashion, now known as The Sicilian Gypsy. These Gypsies craft their treasures in a charming little design studio named “Marilucia” in a quaint villa nestled in the hillsides of San Diego County, reminiscent of Maria’s native Sicily.
